Shook Design has been exploring the possibilities of harnessing the wind with wind turbines to provide propulsion for sail boats. The vertically rotating turbine rotation will be transferred to a traditional underwater prop. With this system there is much less dependence on wind direction for propulsion. The advantages of a rotary sailboat would be the ability to store energy in the keel while anchored so that the boat can travel faster than the wind on wind energy alone. Initial research indicates that this system can be more efficient (considering varied wind directions) than a traditional sail. Shook Design intern Street Brown conceived and rendered these concepts.
